As I love to imagine my life as a sprawling story with a wide cast of characters, I have written their little bios to reflect the storybook nature of things. Please keep in mind that I am writing them as I knew them and only writing what I was allowed by them to see. All of them are and were so much more than can be summarized within a short blurb.
A young, bright-eyed romantic with an everlasting love for stories, people, and all things dark and melancholy. Madi finds themself returning back to their home town after a long, thankless, brutal year away with a new lease on life and a fierce determination to live it to the fullest. Though many things back in the sleepy little mountain town of Granite Falls have changed, just as many remain the same comforts they always were, and Madi is intent to never take them for granted again.
Madi identifies themself as a perky goth and enjoys long walks through the moonlit town graveyard. They spend most of their free time talking online with their friends both near and far, as well as running a small channel on a fairly new video platform called "YouTube." They like writing, drawing, cosplaying, and consuming absolutely lethal amounts of Dr. Pepper and Hot Pockets. They're proudly out as queer, and waffle between identifying as bisexual and "lesbian with exceptions." Madi is a staunch pacifist and devout wiccan, and believes in the threefold law of karma like it is pure gospel.
Despite their edgy appearance, they are oddly pop2ular at school, and seem to encounter no problems making friends with just about anyone.
Hyperactive, boundlessly creative, and delightfully unorthodox, Shade is Madi's best friend forever. Though they only met a few years prior, it has taken the two of them no time at all to become inseparable. None of the typical suspects can seem to hold a candle to their bond as friends--not Shade's latent romantic feelings for Madi, not the fact that they operate on completely different sleep schedules, and certainly not the year they've just been forced to spend mostly apart. It seems that, barring the endtimes, there is little on planet earth that can break this dynamic duo apart.
Beneath their goofy exterior, Shade is a romantic guy with a good heart who has an unfortunate tendency to wind up in the wrong place at the wrong time. They seem to create with unending stamina, filling sketchbooks in mere days and always having a new idea for a character design or silly comic strip. Sometime in the 7th grade they were wrongfully expelled from GFMS for the unforgivable crime of having a cosplay prop, but the friend group has taken careful note to continue to include them whenever they're able.
Just like Madi, Shade loves anime, video games, and cartoons. When not at Madi's house, their grandparents' suburban paradise is where most of the wild preteen parties take place. They have an affinity for cats and monkeys.

Trent is a soft-spoken, gentle-hearted guitarist and lyricist who prefers to keep to himself and a few really good friends. He and Madi met in the year they were attending 7th grade at a new school, and after a multitude of twists and turns and tiptoeing around one another, the two finally began dating sometime in winter of 2008.
Behind a long mop of dark curls, Trent is the definition of calm waters running deep. The only thing he enjoys more than writing music is listening to it, and this is one of Madi's absolute favourite things about him. Currently, the two of them are working through the teenage version of "long distance," as they complete middle school in different cities, but they visit every other weekend and seem to be going strong despite it.

Independant, stylish, charismatic, and intelligent, Mello refuses to allow themself to be put into a box. A confident speaker with a passion for creative writing, they're a social butterfly beloved by all for their free spirit and paradoxically agreeable demeanour. Mello will don Hollister jeans on Monday and Tripp pants on Wednesday, and one can't help but feel drawn to the way both somehow manage to fit them like a glove.
Mello and Madi have known each other since elementary school, where their paths were more or less forced to cross due to their strange, real-life narrative-foil-esque relationship. Not only were the two of them vastly more mature than their peers, but similarly academically gifted and eloquent in speech. To make matters even more cosmic, they had strikingly similar first names.
Though their relationship has had a whirlwind of ups and downs throughout the years, the pair currently find it... inexplicably stronger than ever? With Mello's ventures into fandom and anime, they have more to bond over than they ever have before, and that ruthless competitive streak that often wedged itself in between them prior has now turned into something that's... almost fun.
